ABOUT the Building Equity & Alignment for Impact Initiative (BEA)
The Building Equity and Alignment for Impact Initiative is a grassroots-led initiative that was launched in July 2013 to create a more inclusive, connected, winning environmental movement. BEA’s three main goals are:
•       To expand the pool of resources available to environmental and overlapping progressive issues and more equitably resource the grassroots organizing sector;
•       To break down historic barriers among big green, grassroots and funding sectors, building authentic relationships toward greater alignment and solidarity;
•       To support philanthropic efforts toward a base-building, bottom-up, collaborative approach, and away from a funder-driven, top-down approach.
 

The Position:
The Development Director is responsible for leading BEA’s efforts to raise an annual operating budget of about $1.2 million and $2 million for the BEA Fund—a pooled fund for the grassroots sector. BEA’s revenues are comprised of donations from foundations and large environmental organizations. We are looking for a seasoned candidate with a creative and strategic development vision, including the ability to work collaboratively to generate new and innovative ideas. This position is expected to leverage BEA’s mission and program achievements into meaningful connections with potential donors and funders as well as to create and drive BEA’s fundraising vision to align the environmental movement and increase resources to the grassroots sector.
Working for the BEA provides an excellent opportunity to plug into a real movement-building effort during this historic time; the first “de-siloed” effort of its kind to effectively address disparities of resources and access among the philanthropic, “big green”, grassroots, and their aligned allied sectors.

Salary: $90,000

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive strategic fundraising plan for the BEA and the BEAI Fund, in partnership with BEA staff and leadership, that achieves BEA and BEAI Fund’s annual revenue projections.
  • Collaborate with BEA staff, leadership, and participants to proactively and diligently identify, steward and solicit donations.
  • Lead funder relationships and outreach, including planning and coordinating meetings with funders with support from BEA staff, leadership, and participants.
  • Draft and timely submit letters of inquiry, grant proposals, and reports to funders, and perform necessary follow-up.
  • With respect to fundraising for the BEA Fund, closely coordinate and obtain support from the BEA Fund’s [CH1] manager, Grassroots International (GRI)
  • Support oversight of BEA’s overall budget in close collaboration with BEA’s Administrative Manager and Project Director, including developing income projections and tracking with a goal of long-term sustainable growth.
  • Support the development of BEA messaging for donors.
  • Help grow revenue from potential and emerging opportunities.
  • Approximately 25% of time dedicated to travel.
  • Organizational Leadership and Planning
  • Represent BEA as the lead Development staff person at conferences, BEA activities, and fundraising events, and provide status updates to staff and leadership.
  • Build systems and organizational culture to coach staff, leadership, and participants on donor engagement across multiple channels, leveraging donors to build power and impact.
  • Promote a culture of collaboration, transparency, feedback and continuous improvement that values learning, accountability and a commitment to equity.
  • Coordinate closely with Grassroots International – the manager of the BEA Fund.
  • Represent BEA’s work and values effectively and compellingly to external audiences.
  • Required Skills and Experience:
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising with individual and institutional donors, and in growing long-term support for an organization.
  • Progressively senior-level experience, strong leadership, organizational and management skills that include coaching and inspiring others on fundraising and donor relations.
  • Strategic and creative thinking: ability to set priorities, balance short-term and long-term objectives, prioritizing long-term financial health of the initiative.
  • Strong analytical, data-driven and relationship building approach to fundraising.
  • Demonstrated leadership in the creation of a diverse, equitable and inclusive work culture that encourages and celebrates differences with a strong commitment to creating a workplace culture grounded in the values of racial equity, inclusion and justice.
  • Strong communication skills that convey organization’s work in a compelling way and the ability to adapt messaging for various audiences.
  • Excellent judgment and emotional intelligence for long-term relationship building with staff, leadership, participants, and donors — a natural collaborator.
  • Strong ability to prioritize, manage projects, and work autonomously, as well as in teams.
  • Excellent writing skills.
