Since BEA was founded in 2013, we have worked to nurture authentic relationships between the philanthropic, national green, and grassroots sectors, grounded in just and principled ways of working together.
As part of the Clean Power Plan (CPP) policy work, we held two CPP Forums for organizers, advocates, funders, and representatives from social justice groups to discuss equity issues, find ways to overcome longstanding cross-sector tensions, and build trust to move forward. These Forums provided a safe space for honest conversations, as well as opportunities to listen and grow as a movement.
We are now planning a Just Transition Forum to be held February 26-28, 2018, in Jackson, Mississippi.
Since the 1980s, Just Transition has been a strategic discourse between labor unions and environmental justice groups collaborating to phase out industries that harm workers, community health and the planet. This discourse defined the need to build economic alternatives rooted in community self-determination, sustainable livelihoods and systemic change. In recent years, efforts by international unions and the climate justice movement led to the inclusion of Just Transition in the 2015 Paris Accord.
Despite these advances, Just Transition remains a new concept for many in philanthropy and national environmental organizations. It’s time to include more of our allies at this table. Contact us for more information on the Forum.
